"Welcome to the party, pal."
College Football - Saturday, September 5, 2026 - Week 1

McClane signs off on the leans below.

Early Window

9:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM ET
#1 - Lean
Liberty +6.5 at James Madison
9:00 AM PT (12:00 ET) - ESPNU - JMU -6, +6.5 still dealing
The case: JMU is a full rebuild - new head coach (Billy Napier), new starting QB, new offensive line, entirely new secondary. Week 1 clunkiness is the expectation, not the risk. Liberty brings back Jamey Chadwell's system and one of the best G5 running back rooms (Duke transfer Peyton Jones).
What kills it: Liberty went 4-8 last year for a reason. If JMU's new QB settles in early, the Dukes' raw talent at home is a class up and this gets away late.
#2 - Lean
Ohio +23.5 at Nebraska
9:00 AM PT (12:00 ET) - FS1 - +23.5, some books +24.5 - Total 46.5
The case: Ohio is one of the MAC's most stable programs, and this staff literally just beat Nebraska QB Anthony Colandrea in a bowl game - held him to 184 yards with UNLV. FOX Sports' pick is Ohio covering. Three-plus scores is a lot for a Week 1 favorite breaking in a new QB.
What kills it: Ohio bleeds talent to the portal every year. If Nebraska's line overwhelms the Bobcats' new-look offense at home, it snowballs past 24 in a hurry.
#3 - Lean
Alabama vs East Carolina - Under 52.5
9:00 AM PT (12:00 ET) - ABC - Bama -27.5 - Total 52.5
The case: Keelon Russell's first career start for Bama. Their 2025 games averaged 48.7 combined points, that defense allowed 19.2 a game last year, and it gets sixth-year ECU QB Mitch Griffis. Only prior meeting between these programs: 23-22, 45 total points.
What kills it: Bama hangs 45 by themselves and garbage time does the rest.

The 9:30 Window

9:30 AM PT / 12:30 PM ET
Hans Gruber
Hans Gruber - Pass the Window
Two games. Pitt -16.5 vs Miami (OH) and Ohio State -50.5 vs Ball State. Both home teams are big favorites - a true home dog does not exist at 9:30. Don't force a bet because the TV's on.
Only defensible play - road dog
Miami (OH) +16.5 at Pitt
9:30 AM PT (12:30 ET) - The CW - +16.5 - Total 47.5
The case: Five straight bowl games, picked 2nd in the MAC, and they've beaten a Power-4 team in two of the last four years. Miami has covered numbers in this range in 9 of their last 10; Pitt has covered -16.5-type lines in only 3 of their last 10. No line steam either way.
What kills it: 46% of the roster is new, the QB who started the MAC title game is out for the season, and a redshirt freshman makes his first career start in a P4 stadium. If the kid drowns early it's 31-10 by the fourth.

Afternoon Window

12:30 PM PT / 3:30 PM ET
#1 - Best bet of the day
Boise State +24.5 at #2 Oregon
12:30 PM PT (3:30 ET) - CBS - +24.5 - Total 51.5
The case: 24.5 is a monster number for a program that's won three straight conference titles and nearly beat Oregon in Eugene in 2024 (37-34) with Maddux Madsen making his first big start. Madsen's back and seasoned, and the run game (Riley + Gaines, ~2,000 combined yards) chews clock - exactly how you live inside a big number.
What kills it: Oregon might have the best roster in the sport and the best interior DL in the country. If they erase the run, Boise has no second dimension. Autzen is a tomb.
#2 - Lean (contrarian)
Baylor +7.5 vs Auburn (Atlanta)
12:30 PM PT (3:30 ET) - ABC - +7.5 - Total 59.5
The case: Neutral site priced like a home game, and Baylor has DJ Lagway - the highest ceiling on the field. Everyone expects a track meet (total 59.5), and track meets don't stay two scores apart. Fair warning: this one is contrarian.
What kills it: Auburn's QB already knows the playbook cold - he came over with his coach. And the building will be 80% Auburn.
#3 - Lean
Texas vs Texas State - Over 59.5
12:30 PM PT (3:30 ET) - ESPN - Texas -29.5 - Total 59.5
The case: The books expect Texas into the 40s on their own, and Texas State's pace keeps possessions coming even in a blowout. The number wants 60 and this game has every path there.
What kills it: Texas goes vanilla with a big lead and the backups kill the clock for a quarter and a half.

Evening Window

4:30 PM PT / 7:30 PM ET
#1 - Lean
Clemson +10.5 at #11 LSU
4:30 PM PT (7:30 ET) - ABC - +10.5 - Total 50.5 - ML +310
The case: Double digits at a night game for a program with Clemson's talent. Wesco and Moore are real, and LSU has dealt with distractions all fall camp - up to and including the SEC suing Lane Kiffin. Vizzina is green, but +10.5 buys a lot of margin, and the Kiffin era debut comes with real pressure.
What kills it: Tiger Stadium at night is a wood chipper. LSU is the more talented team, and Vizzina's first real road start could produce short fields all night.
Ellis play - crazy longshot
Clemson Moneyline +310
Same game, same time - sprinkle only
The case: If Vizzina is the guy and LSU's camp chaos is real, the moneyline pays better than 3-to-1. Ellis says it's a sure thing. Ellis also said Hans was a great guy.
What kills it: Reality. It's a longshot for a reason - lunch money only.
Hans Gruber
Hans Gruber - The Rest of the Window
Western Michigan +28 at Michigan, Missouri State at Texas A&M, Abilene Christian at Texas Tech, VMI at Virginia Tech. FCS filler and a four-score MAC game. Hard pass.

Late Night - The Home Dawgs

7:00-7:30 PM PT
#1 - Featured home dawg
Cal +1.5 vs UCLAHome Dawg
7:30 PM PT (10:30 ET) - ESPN - +1.5 - Total 54.5 - ML +105
The case: The line moved from UCLA -2.5/-3 down to -1.5 - the money is on Cal. Sagapolutele finished 2025 on a heater (9 TDs, 0 picks over the last four, 315 yards a game), and Tosh Lupoi reloaded the whole roster through the portal. UCLA was 0-4 against the spread as a favorite last year - worst in the country - and Nico Iamaleava is on his fourth coach in three years. Night game in Berkeley with the points and the momentum.
What kills it: Cal lost 9 of its top 12 tacklers and starts a rebuilt defense in game one. Nico's ceiling is the best player on the field, and UCLA's JMU-import defense had 36 sacks last year.
#2 - Home dawg
Hawaii +3.5 vs UNLVHome Dawg
7:00 PM PT (10:00 ET) - The CW - +3.5 - Total 55.5 - ML +125
The case: A field goal and the hook at the Ching Complex. The forecast is 17-19 mph wind - that kills vertical passing, shortens the game, and makes every point worth more, which is exactly what a home dog wants. UNLV is 0-1 and breaking in a new QB after losing Colandrea to Nebraska.
What kills it: That same wind favors UNLV's run-first plan more than Hawaii's pass-first offense. If the Rainbow Warriors can't throw, the box gets stacked and the points don't matter.
Ellis
Ellis approves of late-night home dogs. Nobody trusts Ellis.
