Bornean Orangutans Bornean orangutans are a type of orangutan found only on the island of Borneo, which is shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. They’re known for being very smart, with some unique behaviors and cool physical features. Where They Live Bornean orangutans live in Borneo’s tropical rainforests, swampy areas, and even high mountain forests. What They Look Like The males can get big—up to 220 pounds and 5 feet tall! Females are smaller, around 100 pounds. They have reddish-brown fur, super long arms, and flexible hands and feet that help them swing and climb in the trees. Male orangutans also grow large cheek pads called "flanges," which might help them attract females. Behavior and Diet They mainly eat fruits like durians and figs, but they also munch on leaves, plant bark, insects, and even soil to get minerals. They’re so clever that they use leaves as gloves or umbrellas and use sticks to dig for insects or seeds. Orangutans usually live alone, except when they come together to mate. Young ones stay with their moms for up to 8 years to learn important skills. Males also make long, loud calls to show their territory or attract females. Endangered Status Bornean orangutans are critically endangered. Logging, palm oil plantations, and forest fires have destroyed much of their habitat. Over the past 60 years, their population has dropped by more than half, and this will continue if deforestation keeps happening. Groups are working hard to protect their homes and help orangutans affected by habitat loss. Cool Facts Bornean orangutans are amazing at solving problems, and they use tools like sticks to get food! Females only have babies every 6-8 years, so their population grows slowly. They also share about 97% of their DNA with humans, which makes them one of our closest relatives.
